BRIEF

Yes, the ChatGPT API costs money, and your Plus subscription does not cover it

Yes. The API is pay-per-use, billed from a separate prepaid balance, and your $20 ChatGPT Plus subscription includes none of it. For typical small-business use, the API bill usually comes to a few dollars a month, not another $20.

WHAT THIS ADDSMost people asking this are about to make one of two mistakes. They assume the API is free because ChatGPT is free, or they assume it is another $20 subscription. Our worked example puts 300 AI-drafted email replies at roughly $0.35 to $2.33 a month at list prices. The real risk is paying twice: Plus, plus the API, plus a software vendor's marked-up AI add-on.

Yes, and it is a completely separate bill from ChatGPT

The ChatGPT API costs money. You pay per use, from a prepaid balance you top up on OpenAI's developer platform (platform.openai.com). That account is billed separately from the ChatGPT app you chat with at chatgpt.com.

This is where most people go wrong. A ChatGPT Plus subscription does not include any API usage. You can pay $20 a month for Plus and still have a zero balance on the API side. If a piece of software asks for your OpenAI API key, it will fail until you add credit there. Your Plus plan won't help.

Two other things that are not true:

  • "There's a free tier." OpenAI used to hand new developer accounts a small trial credit. New accounts generally don't get one now. Plan on adding money before your first request works.
  • "It's a monthly subscription." It isn't. There is no flat fee. If you use nothing in a month, you pay nothing that month.

The same split applies to Claude. A Claude Pro subscription and Anthropic's API are billed separately too.

What a real month of use costs

The API charges per token, which is roughly three-quarters of a word. Text you send in (input) costs less than text the model writes back (output).

Take an example. Dana, a wedding photographer, has her CRM draft replies to about 300 inquiry and follow-up emails a month. Say each draft sends the model about 1,500 tokens: the email thread plus her instructions. Each draft gets back about 400 tokens of reply. That adds up to 450,000 input tokens and 120,000 output tokens a month.

Model (list price per 1M tokens, input / output)Input costOutput costMonth total
GPT-5 mini ($0.25 / $2.00)$0.11$0.24$0.35
GPT-5 ($1.25 / $10.00)$0.56$1.20$1.76
GPT-4o ($2.50 / $10.00)$1.13$1.20$2.33
For comparison: ChatGPT Plusn/an/a$20.00 flat

These are OpenAI's published list prices from the GPT-5 launch in August 2025. Rates change, so check the current pricing page and plug in today's numbers. The method stays the same: tokens in × input rate, plus tokens out × output rate.

Where the bill gets bigger is volume and length. Long documents, whole contracts pasted in, or thousands of requests a day will raise it. Short email replies won't. For other jobs, such as call summaries and quote drafts, see what each AI job costs a small business.

How the bill works, and how to keep it from surprising you

OpenAI's API runs on prepaid credit. You add money with a card, and each request draws the balance down. A few practical points:

  • Start small. The minimum top-up is low (it has been $5). At the rates above, $5 would cover Dana's email drafting for months on the mini model.
  • Leave auto-recharge off at first. With it off, your prepaid balance is a hard ceiling. A runaway automation stops when the money runs out instead of billing your card again.
  • Set a usage alert in the billing settings so you get an email at a dollar amount you choose.
  • Watch the expiry. Prepaid credits have an expiry date (OpenAI has used one year from purchase). Don't load $200 "to be safe" if you will use $20.
  • Check usage by day in the dashboard after your first week. One look tells you your real cost per month better than any estimate.

Creating the key itself is free. The breakdown of what you actually pay for with an API key covers that ground, so we won't repeat it here.

Which one you should actually pay for

The decision comes down to who is typing.

If you are the one chatting, keep using ChatGPT, free or Plus. Use it to brainstorm a price list, rewrite your About page, or ask how to word a late-payment email. You don't need the API at all. Plus makes sense if you hit the free plan's limits.

If software is calling the AI for you, you need the API. That covers drafting replies inside your inbox, summarizing a new lead, or filling in a quote. Here the per-use pricing almost always beats a flat add-on.

The thing to avoid is paying three times over. That means Plus for yourself, an API balance, and a $20 to $50 "AI add-on" from your CRM vendor that is really their API bill plus margin. Ask any vendor one question: can I use my own key? If they say yes, the table above is your real cost. If they say no, you are paying their markup.

Fynl is built the first way. Its AI features run on your own OpenAI or Anthropic key, so you pay the provider directly at their rates. If you only need AI in one tool you already like, check whether that tool accepts your own key before you switch anything.

DO THISIf you only chat with AI yourself, skip the API and stay on free or Plus. If software is drafting or summarizing for you, add $5 of API credit with auto-recharge off, check your real usage after a week, and avoid any tool that won't let you use your own key.

Questions people also ask

Does ChatGPT Plus give me API access?

No. Plus covers the ChatGPT app only. The API is billed from a separate prepaid balance on OpenAI's developer platform, so you need to add credit there even if you already pay for Plus.

Is there a free version of the ChatGPT API?

Not in practice for new accounts. OpenAI used to give trial credits but generally no longer does, so expect to add a small prepaid balance before your first request works.

Can the API charge me more than I expect?

Only if auto-recharge is on. With auto-recharge off, usage stops when your prepaid balance runs out. Add a usage alert in billing settings as a second check.

Is the Claude API priced the same way?

Yes, the structure is the same: pay per token, billed separately from a Claude Pro subscription. The per-token rates differ by model, so compare them on Anthropic's pricing page.
