GUIDE

Claude Team has a price you can look up, and Enterprise is not built for a five-person business

Claude Team has published per-seat pricing, roughly $25 to $30 per person a month with a five-seat minimum. Enterprise is quote-only and sized for organizations with dozens or hundreds of seats. For most small businesses the real choice is between individual Pro seats, Team, and paying per use through the API.

WHAT THIS ADDSThe five-seat minimum means a three-person shop pays at least $1,500 a year for Team, against about $600 for three annual Pro seats. Team only earns that gap if you need its admin controls and commercial data terms. Neither plan gives you the API key that lets AI run inside your own tools.

The short answer is that one plan has a price and the other has a sales call

Claude Team is self-serve. You pick a seat count, enter a card, and pay per person per month. At the time of writing, Anthropic lists a standard Team seat at about $25 per person per month billed annually, or $30 billed monthly, with a minimum of five seats. There is also a premium seat that bundles Claude Code and more usage. It has been listed at around $150 per person per month. You can mix standard and premium seats on one account.

Claude Enterprise has no public price. The pricing page says to contact sales. When Enterprise launched in 2024, press reports put it at around $60 per seat with a minimum of roughly 70 seats on a 12-month contract. Anthropic has never confirmed those numbers publicly, and enterprise deals get negotiated, so treat them as a sense of scale and not a quote.

Prices on AI plans have moved several times since 2024. Before you decide anything, open Anthropic's pricing page and check the current figures. The reasoning below still holds if the numbers have shifted by a few dollars.

What Team really costs when you only have three people

The headline per-seat price hides the line that matters most to a small business: the minimum. Five seats is the floor. If you have three people, you still pay for five.

Here is that math with the published standard-seat prices:

  • Team, 5 seats, billed annually: $25 × 5 × 12 = $1,500 a year
  • Team, 5 seats, billed monthly: $30 × 5 × 12 = $1,800 a year
  • Three individual Pro seats, billed annually: about $200 × 3 = $600 a year
  • Three individual Pro seats, billed monthly: $20 × 3 × 12 = $720 a year

So a three-person photography studio or a small clinic front desk pays roughly two and a half times more for Team than for separate Pro accounts. Team does give each person more usage than Pro, but the usage does not explain the gap. You are paying for the account structure.

If anyone on your team writes code or wants Claude Code with heavy usage, the premium seat changes the picture. One premium seat at around $150 a month is $1,800 a year by itself. For a contractor or body shop, that is almost never the right buy. For a two-person software studio, it might be. We covered what Claude Code and Projects actually include in the Pro and Max explainer, so we will not repeat it here.

Once you have five or more people who would all use Claude most days, the per-person cost of Team is fine. At that size the question flips: you are no longer paying for empty seats, and the admin features start doing real work.

What the extra money buys you on Team, and on Enterprise

Team is not just Pro with a group discount. The differences are about control, not about the AI being smarter. Team and Enterprise use the same Claude models that Pro does.

What Team adds over individual Pro seats

  • One bill and one admin. You add and remove people yourself. When someone leaves, you take their seat back, and their chats stay with the business, not on their personal account.
  • Commercial data terms. Anthropic says it does not train its models on Team and Enterprise conversations by default. Consumer accounts work differently: Anthropic changed its consumer terms in 2025, and individual users have to check their own training setting. If you handle client files, medical notes, or contracts, this point alone can justify Team.
  • Shared projects. Your team can work from the same reference documents, such as a price list, a style guide, or standard contract wording.
  • Higher usage limits per person than Pro.

What Enterprise adds over Team

  • Single sign-on and automatic user provisioning (SSO and SCIM), so accounts follow your company login system.
  • Audit logs and finer permission controls, which matter when a compliance officer has to answer for who saw what.
  • Custom data retention settings.
  • A larger context window on some models, meaning it can read more material in one go.
  • A contract, an account manager, and negotiated terms.

Look at that Enterprise list from the point of view of a ten-person dental practice or a roofing company. Almost none of it solves a problem you have. SSO matters when you have an IT department managing a hundred logins. Audit logs matter when a regulator or a client's security team asks for them. If nobody has ever asked you for either, you do not need Enterprise.

Neither plan gives you an API key, and that is where most small businesses get it wrong

This is the part most comparison pages skip. People search for Team versus Enterprise because they want Claude to do work for the business: draft follow-up emails, summarize enquiries, write quote descriptions, sort the inbox. A chat subscription, at any tier, does not do that automatically. Somebody still has to open Claude, paste in the email, and copy the answer back out.

To have Claude run inside your CRM, your email, or your booking system, you need an API key. The API is billed separately, through Anthropic's developer console, per use. Your Team or Enterprise subscription does not include API credit, and an API account does not include chat seats. They are two different products that share a model.

The API is also usually much cheaper than people expect for small-business volumes. You pay per request, measured in tokens, with no monthly fee. We walked through how token billing works and worked out that a typical task costs between a tenth of a cent and about 3 cents. A business drafting a few hundred emails and summaries a month often lands in single-digit dollars. The ChatGPT API cost breakdown shows the same pattern on OpenAI's side, along with the one kind of feature that can make the bill jump.

So the honest comparison for a small business is not Team versus Enterprise. It is three options:

  1. Individual Pro seats for the one or two people who like to think things through in a chat window.
  2. Team, when you have five or more regular users or you need business data terms and central control.
  3. An API key plugged into the tools you already use, for the repetitive work that should happen without anyone opening a chat.

Many businesses end up with a combination: one or two Pro seats, plus an API key doing the background work for a few dollars a month.

Working through three real-sized businesses

Here is how the decision plays out at three common sizes. The prices are the published ones above; swap in today's numbers if they have changed.

A solo wedding photographer

Team is not available to you in any useful way, because you would pay for four empty seats. Pro at $20 a month covers the chat side. If what you really want is replies to enquiry emails drafted inside your inbox, an API key in your email or CRM tool does that more directly than any seat.

A four-person auto body shop

Two people would use Claude regularly: the owner and the person writing estimates. Team's five-seat floor means about $1,500 to $1,800 a year. Two Pro seats cost about $400 to $480. Unless customer data terms are a real concern for you, two Pro seats plus an API key for estimate write-ups is the cheaper and more useful setup.

Worth knowing: OpenAI's business plan for ChatGPT (formerly ChatGPT Team, now called ChatGPT Business) has had a two-seat minimum at similar per-seat pricing. For a two- or three-person business that wants business data terms without paying for empty seats, that can be the better fit. Check OpenAI's current pricing before you rely on this.

A twelve-person physical therapy clinic

Now Team makes sense. Twelve people at $25 each is $3,600 a year on annual billing. There are no empty seats, the admin controls save real time when staff turn over, and the commercial data terms matter when patient details end up in prompts. Even so, do not paste patient records into any AI tool until you have checked your own compliance obligations. A HIPAA-covered practice needs the right agreement in place, and that is a conversation with Anthropic's sales team, not a checkbox. That conversation is the most likely reason a clinic of this size would end up talking about Enterprise at all.

Enterprise starts to make sense when you have an IT person, a login system that everyone uses, and dozens of seats. If the reported 70-seat minimum is close to accurate, that is a contract of roughly $50,000 a year. Most readers of this blog are nowhere near that, and that is fine.

What I would actually do

Start by counting the people who would open Claude most working days. Not the people who might try it once. Include only the ones who would actually use it.

  • Fewer than five daily users: buy individual Pro seats for them. Revisit Team when you reach five.
  • Five or more daily users, or you handle sensitive client data: Team, billed annually if you are confident, monthly for the first few months if you are not. The extra $5 a seat for monthly billing is cheap insurance while you find out whether people actually use it.
  • An IT department, a compliance officer, or 50+ seats: ask Anthropic for an Enterprise quote, and get ChatGPT Enterprise quoted at the same time so you have something to compare against.

Separately, list the repeated jobs you want AI to handle without anyone typing into a chat: enquiry replies, quote descriptions, meeting summaries, follow-ups. Those belong on an API key, not a seat. Get your own key from Anthropic or OpenAI, set a monthly spending limit in the console, and plug it into whatever runs your business. Fynl's portal works this way. You paste in your own Claude or ChatGPT key, the AI features run against it at Anthropic's or OpenAI's price with nothing added, and the key stays yours if you ever leave. Any tool that accepts your own key gives you the same economics, so use that as the test when you compare software.

One thing not to do: do not buy Team to get API access, and do not buy API credit expecting chat seats. They are billed separately, and mixing them up is the most common way small businesses end up paying for something they cannot use.

DO THISCount the people who would use Claude daily. Under five, buy Pro seats; five or more, or if you handle sensitive data, buy Team; only ask about Enterprise if you have an IT department and dozens of seats. Put repeated background work on your own API key with a spending limit, because no seat plan includes one.

Questions people also ask

Does Claude Team include API access?

No. Team and Enterprise are chat subscriptions. API usage is billed separately through Anthropic's developer console, per token, and needs its own account and key.

Can I buy Claude Team for just two or three people?

Anthropic has set a five-seat minimum, so you would pay for five. For two or three users, individual Pro seats are usually cheaper. OpenAI's ChatGPT Business plan has had a two-seat minimum if you need business data terms at that size.

Is my business data used to train Claude on Team or Enterprise?

Anthropic says Team and Enterprise conversations are not used for training by default under its commercial terms. Individual Pro and Max accounts follow the consumer terms, so each user should check their own setting.

Can I mix standard and premium seats on Team?

Yes. Team lets you assign premium seats, which include Claude Code and more usage, to the people who need them and standard seats to everyone else.

How do I find out what Enterprise would cost me?

Contact Anthropic's sales team with your seat count and the features you need, such as SSO, audit logs, or a compliance agreement. Get a ChatGPT Enterprise quote at the same time so you have a comparison.
