How to use GPT-6 and Intelligent UI in ChatGPT (free)
GPT-6 is now the model in the ChatGPT Chat tab, and it is rolling out to Free users from October 8. Here is who gets which version, how Intelligent UI works, and prompts to try today.

On October 7, 2026 OpenAI brought GPT-6 with Intelligent UI to the Chat tab in ChatGPT. Instead of answering every question with paragraphs, ChatGPT can now mix text, visuals and interactive pieces: side-by-side comparisons, diagrams, charts, tappable buttons, forms, and small tools you use right in the conversation, such as calculators, bill splitters and games.
It picks the format on its own, and it still gives a plain text answer when that is the most useful thing.

- It is a rollout, so it may take a little while to reach your account.
- On Enterprise, availability depends on your workspace admin settings.
- Intelligent UI works from Instant through Extra High reasoning. The Pro reasoning option still uses GPT-6 Astra and does not support Intelligent UI.
- The models behind Work and Codex are not changing with this release. This is about the Chat tab.
How to use it
- Open ChatGPT on the web or the app.
- Stay in the Chat tab.
- Just ask your question. ChatGPT decides whether a chart, a comparison, a tool or plain text fits best.
- If you want a tool, say so. OpenAI's own examples include asking for a calculator to explore how savings could grow, a bill splitter for dinner with friends, or a game to play in the conversation.
There is no setting to switch on in OpenAI's announcement. If your plan has the update, you will see it in the Chat tab.

These are example prompts, not quotes from OpenAI. The format you get back can vary, because the model chooses it.
It starts answering while it thinks
GPT-6 can begin answering while it is still thinking or using tools, then add more findings without another prompt. You can start reading before the full answer is ready.
OpenAI's numbers: for questions that need web search, GPT-6 Instant starts answering 44% sooner, on average, than GPT-5.6 Instant. In an internal test of everyday agentic tasks, GPT-6 Extra High began answering in the same time as GPT-5.6 Medium while scoring better overall than GPT-5.6 Extra High. These are OpenAI's internal evaluations.
Limits to know
- It is rolling out, so not every account has it on day one.
- The Pro reasoning option (GPT-6 Astra) does not support Intelligent UI.
- OpenAI says there is still work ahead to improve the model's design judgment and expand what it can create.
- A tool ChatGPT builds is only as right as its math. Check totals before you send a price to a customer.

Yes. OpenAI says Free and Go users get GPT-6 Luna in the Chat tab, with the rollout starting October 8, 2026. Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise get GPT-6 Sol.
What is Intelligent UI in ChatGPT?

OpenAI says Sol powers ChatGPT for Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise, and Luna powers it for Free and Go. Both are tuned for everyday conversation.
Does GPT-6 change ChatGPT Work or Codex?
No. OpenAI says the models powering Work and Codex are not changing as part of this release.
