BRIEF

There is no waitlist for Claude Code or Projects, and a form asking for one is a warning sign

Both are open to anyone right now. Projects comes with a paid claude.ai plan, and Claude Code comes with Pro, Max, or a pay-as-you-go API key. The only real decision is which of those three to pay for.

WHAT THIS ADDSAt the average Claude Code cost Anthropic itself has published (about $6 per active day on the API), the $20 Pro plan pays for itself after roughly four days of use a month. Most owners who search for a waitlist should just buy Pro. The API key only makes sense if you want Claude inside your own tools, not in a terminal.

Claude Code and Projects are both open now, with no list to join

There is no waitlist for Claude Code or for Projects. If you can log in to claude.ai on a paid plan, you already have both. If you have an Anthropic Console account with a payment method, you can run Claude Code on an API key today.

Projects arrived in claude.ai in June 2024 for Pro and Team users. Claude Code started as a limited research preview in February 2025, became generally available in May 2025 alongside the Claude 4 models, and was added to the $20 Pro plan shortly after. Whatever gating existed during that early preview ended over a year ago.

The search keeps happening because old launch posts, Reddit threads, and YouTube videos from the preview period still rank. They describe a door that is no longer locked.

Anthropic does still use waitlists, but for brand-new experiments, the way the Claude browser extension was rolled out to a small group first in 2025. When that happens, the signup sits on anthropic.com or inside your claude.ai account. It does not sit on a third-party page.

Three ways in, and what each one costs

Here are the three paths, with the list prices Anthropic published. Prices change, so confirm on the official pricing page before you pay.

PathPriceProjects?Claude Code?How usage is limited
Claude Pro$20/month, or $17/month billed yearlyYesYesMessage limits that reset every five hours, plus weekly caps
Claude Max$100 or $200/monthYesYes5x or 20x Pro's limits
API key (Console)Pay per token. Sonnet is $3 per million input tokens and $15 per million output tokensNoYesOnly your own spend limit

The number most people miss is what Claude Code costs on a key. Anthropic's own cost page has put the average at about $6 per developer per day, with 90% of users under $12 a day. Claude Code reads whole files and runs long back-and-forth sessions, so it burns tokens far faster than a chat does.

Do the arithmetic. At $6 a day, four days of real use costs $24, which is more than a month of Pro. If you expect to open Claude Code more than three or four times a month, Pro is the cheaper way in. If you will try it once on a Saturday to fix your website and never again, a key with a $10 spend limit is cheaper.

The other thing the table shows is that the API key does not give you Projects. Projects is a claude.ai feature. The key is a separate account with separate billing. The differences between the subscriptions are covered in what Pro and Max include and why neither gives you an API key.

A waitlist page that wants your API key is the scam, not the product

Since there is nothing to wait for, a page offering "early access to Claude Code" or "Projects beta signup" is, at best, a marketing list for someone else's product. At worst, it is fishing for your login or your API key.

A leaked API key is a direct line to your credit card. Whoever has it can run up usage billed to you until you notice. Neither the key nor the bill looks unusual until the statement arrives.

Five rules cover it:

  • Sign up only at claude.ai or console.anthropic.com. Type the address yourself rather than clicking an ad.
  • Install Claude Code only with the command shown in Anthropic's documentation. Lookalike package names are an old trick.
  • Never paste an API key into a form, a chat, or a browser extension. Paste it only into the one tool you are setting up.
  • Set a monthly spend limit in the Console the day you create a key. Start low, such as $20, and raise it when you know your real usage.
  • If you think a key leaked, revoke it in the Console and make a new one. It takes under a minute and the old key stops working at once.

Most owners searching for Claude Code actually want something else

Claude Code is a coding agent. It runs in a terminal or code editor and changes files in a software project. That is useful if you maintain your own website code or a few scripts. For a photographer, a body shop, or a clinic, it is usually the wrong tool.

What most owners want is one of two things.

Projects is a folder in claude.ai holding your price list, contract template, and notes on how you write. Every chat inside it starts with that context. For drafting a quote reply or tidying a policy page, that does more for you than Claude Code ever will, and it comes with Pro.

Claude inside the tools you already run the business on, such as drafting replies to booking inquiries or summarizing a client's history before a call, is where your own API key earns its keep. Each of those tasks costs a fraction of a cent to a few cents, as worked out in what an average AI API task costs. That is nothing like Claude Code's $6 a day. Fynl is built around this: you paste your own Claude or ChatGPT key into the portal ($49/month) and pay Anthropic or OpenAI directly for usage, with no markup. It handles email and documents, not SMS or phone calls. If you want to see where the smart step fits among plain rules, see how AI automation actually splits up.

So the decision is short. If you want to write code, buy Pro and use Claude Code there. If you want Claude to know your business, buy Pro and use Projects. If you want AI working inside your CRM and inbox, get an API key, set a spend limit, and put it in a tool that lets you keep it.

DO THISStop looking for a waitlist. Buy Claude Pro if you want Projects or occasional Claude Code. Get an API key with a low spend limit only if you want Claude working inside your own business tools.

Questions people also ask

Is there a waitlist for Claude Code in 2026?

No. Claude Code has been generally available since May 2025. You can use it on a Claude Pro or Max subscription, or on a pay-as-you-go API key from the Anthropic Console.

Can I use Projects with my API key?

No. Projects is a feature of the claude.ai apps and comes with a subscription. An API key is billed separately through the Console and gives you Claude Code and access from other software, but not the Projects folder in claude.ai.

Is Claude Code cheaper on Pro or on an API key?

For regular use, Pro. Anthropic has published an average of about $6 per day on the API, so four days of use a month already costs more than Pro's $20. A key is only cheaper for very occasional use, and you should set a spend limit on it.

A site offered me early access if I enter my API key. Is that real?

Treat it as a scam. Anthropic does not need your key to grant access to anything. If you already entered it, revoke the key in the Console and create a new one.
