UTM Parameters Not Showing in GA4? Where to Look and What to Fix
Most "missing" UTM data is in GA4, just not on the screen you are looking at. When it really is missing, the cause is nearly always one of six things: timing, the wrong dimension, a redirect, a broken tag, a medium GA4 does not know, or Google Ads auto-tagging.

First, where UTM data lives in GA4
GA4 does not have a report called "UTM". The tags feed a set of dimensions, and you choose which one a report shows. Google's campaign URL help page says you can view Session source/medium, Session medium, Session source and Session campaign in the Acquisition, Traffic acquisition report. That is the place to start:
- Open Reports, then Acquisition, then Traffic acquisition.
- Above the table, the first column says Session primary channel group (or Session default channel group). Click the small arrow beside it and choose Session campaign, or Session source / medium.
- Type your campaign name into the search box above the table, spelled exactly as it is in the link.
If you are looking at the channel view (Organic Social, Email, Direct), your campaign is inside those rows, not missing. utm_content and utm_term are not columns in that report by default; the dimensions to add in an exploration are usually called Session manual ad content and Session manual term.
One more detail from the same Google page: the tags are left out of the "Page path + query string" and "Landing page + query string" dimensions. Looking for utm_source in a page report will show nothing even when tracking is working.
The six causes, in the order to check them
1. It is too soon
Google's data freshness page says processing can take 24 to 48 hours, and that before the daily data is ready there can be temporary gaps in source, medium and campaign. A link shared this morning is not missing yet. And the Realtime report is not a reliable test: its help page says the "first user source" card only shows users who have already been through normal processing, so a brand-new visitor from your link can be absent from it.
2. You are looking at the wrong column
Covered above, and it is the most common case. Switch the first column to Session campaign before deciding anything is wrong.
3. A redirect dropped the tags
If the visits arrive but show as Direct or as the site that linked to you, the tags probably never reached the page. Some website platforms, link shorteners and domain rules (http to https, www to no-www, an old page address to a new one) forward the visitor and leave the part after the question mark behind. Open the tagged link on your phone and look at the address bar once the page has loaded. If the tags are gone, link to the final address directly, or ask whoever runs the site to keep the query string on redirects.
4. A tag is missing or misspelled
A link with utm_source but no utm_medium, or with utm-campaign instead of utm_campaign, produces (not set). Google's help on what (not set) means names "manually tagged destination URLs with incomplete or incorrect UTM parameters" as a common cause, and the campaign URL page recommends always setting source, medium and campaign together. Rebuild the link rather than editing it by hand.
5. The medium is one GA4 does not recognise
If the source and campaign are right but the visits sit in Unassigned in the channel report, the medium is the cause. GA4 sorts channels by fixed rules on its default channel group page, and a medium such as "Social Media Post" or "flyer" matches none of them. The visits are not lost: switch to Session source / medium and they are there. For future links use social, paid_social, email, cpc, referral or sms. Google's (not set) page also notes that a session with a missing session_start event is reported as (not set) and shows as Unassigned; that is a tag set-up issue on the site, not a link issue.
6. Google Ads replaced your tags
If you tagged a Google Ads link and see google / cpc instead of your values, that is expected. Google's auto-tagging page says GA4 prioritises auto-tagging over manual tags and has no override. Leave Google Ads links untagged when auto-tagging is on.
Rebuild and re-share the link
Once you know the cause, the fix is usually a new link. In the free UTM builder, paste the final page address (the one shown after any redirect), pick the preset for the channel, type the campaign name and copy. The builder keeps any existing parameters on the address, replaces old utm tags and tells you when it has, and encodes spaces and symbols so a value cannot break the link. With "Tidy values" on, everything is lowercase.
Then test it the same way as before: open it on a phone, check the address bar, and look for the campaign in Traffic acquisition two days later. To stop the spelling problems coming back, the naming convention guide gives a fixed list of sources and mediums, and the guide to creating UTM links covers the test step in detail.
When the tags work but you still can't see the customer
Sometimes the campaign shows in GA4 and the question is really "which of those visitors became customers?" GA4 cannot answer that for a phone call or a form that goes to your inbox; it counts visits and events, not people.
On paid plans, Fynl's forms, website pages and chat keep the first and the latest source, medium and campaign of each person who fills them in, store it on the lead, and Reports lists every source with how many leads it brought and how many you won. Whichever tool you use, the tags only help if they reach the page, so the checks above come first.

Questions people also ask
Where do I find UTM parameters in GA4?
Open Reports, Acquisition, Traffic acquisition and change the table's first column to Session campaign or Session source / medium. utm_content and utm_term are in the Session manual ad content and Session manual term dimensions.
Why does my UTM link show as Direct in GA4?
Usually because the tags never reached the page. A redirect, a link shortener or a domain rule dropped the part after the question mark. Open the link and check the address bar after the page loads.
Why is my UTM traffic Unassigned in GA4?
The medium does not match any of GA4's channel rules, for example 'flyer' or 'Social Media Post'. The visits still show in Session source / medium. Use social, paid_social, email, cpc, referral or sms.
How long does GA4 take to show UTM data?
Google says data processing can take 24 to 48 hours, and source, medium and campaign can have temporary gaps before the daily data is ready.
