    How it works

    Tag, copy, compare

    Paste your link

The page people should land on, with or without https.

    Pick a preset

Google, Facebook, Instagram, email or a QR code fill in the source and medium. Add a campaign name.

    Copy and share

Use the tagged link in your post, ad, email or QR code. It’s saved in your history for next time.

The five UTM tags, in plain words

    • utm_source is who sent the visit: google, facebook, newsletter.
    • utm_medium is the kind of link: cpc for paid search, social, paid_social, email.
    • utm_campaign is the offer or push: spring_sale, new_menu.
    • utm_content tells two links in the same place apart, such as two buttons in one email.
    • utm_term is the paid search keyword. Most small businesses can leave it empty.

Names that land in the right GA4 channel

GA4 sorts visits into channels such as Organic Social, Paid Social, Email and Paid Search by reading the source and medium. The presets use values GA4 recognises: social for normal posts, paid_social for ads, email for newsletters and cpc for Google Ads. A medium GA4 doesn’t know, such as qr, still shows in your source and medium report but sits under Unassigned in the channel report.

GA4 also treats Facebook and facebook as two different sources, which is why tidying to lowercase is on by default. Pick one spelling and keep it.

When not to use UTM tags

Don’t tag links between pages of your own website: the tag replaces where the visitor really came from, so your reports credit your own site instead of the post or ad that brought them. If Google Ads auto-tagging is on, Google tags ad clicks itself, so you only need the Google Ads preset when auto-tagging is off.

    Questions

    UTM questions

    Is this UTM builder free?

Yes. No sign-up, no limit, and the history stays in your browser.

Where do I see UTM results in GA4?

In Google Analytics 4, open Reports, then Acquisition, then Traffic acquisition, and change the table’s first column to Session source / medium or Session campaign.

    Do UTM tags affect SEO?

No. UTM tags don’t change your rankings; they only change what your analytics records. Keep tagged links out of your own site’s menus and pages, though.

    Should UTM values be lowercase?

Yes, ideally. GA4 is case-sensitive, so Facebook and facebook show up as two sources. Tidy values does it for you.

What if my link already has a question mark or a #?

That’s fine. The builder keeps your existing parameters and the # part, replaces any old UTM tags, and encodes spaces and symbols correctly.

How do I track a QR code?

Use the QR code preset, set the source to where the code is printed (flyer, menu, van), copy the link, then press Make a QR code to turn it into a code with our free QR code generator.
