BRIEF
Claude for business is called Claude Team or Claude Enterprise, and most small shops need neither
Anthropic sells Claude to companies as Claude Team and Claude Enterprise, grouped under the label "Claude for Work." There is also a third option nobody calls a business plan, the API, and for a shop of one to four people it is usually the right one.
The three names Anthropic uses for business customers
If you searched for "Claude for business," you were looking for Claude Team or Claude Enterprise. Anthropic groups them under the heading Claude for Work. They are the company versions of the regular Claude chat app, with shared billing, an admin panel, and commercial data terms.
There is a third product that businesses use just as often, and it barely gets a name on the pricing page. That is the Claude API, which Anthropic now runs through its developer platform (it used to be called the Anthropic Console). You don't get a chat window with it. You get a key that other software uses to call Claude, and you pay only for what that software actually sends.
| Name | What it is | How you pay | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Claude Pro | The personal chat app, upgraded | Per person, monthly | One person using Claude in a browser |
| Claude Team | The chat app for a company, with an admin panel and shared projects | Per seat, five seats minimum | Five or more people who all chat with Claude daily |
| Claude Enterprise | Team plus single sign-on, audit logs, larger limits, and a sales contract | Custom quote, no public price | Larger companies with an IT department |
| Claude API | A key your other software uses to reach Claude | Per use (tokens), no seats | Anyone who wants AI inside their CRM, inbox, or forms |
You will also see Claude listed inside Amazon Bedrock and Google Cloud Vertex AI. Those are the same models sold through a cloud provider's bill. They are meant for companies that already run their software on AWS or Google Cloud, which most photographers and body shops don't.
What Team actually costs a shop of one to eight people
When we checked Anthropic's pricing page, a standard Team seat was $25 a month billed annually, or $30 billed monthly, with a minimum of five seats. Anthropic also sells a pricier premium seat that adds Claude Code, its programming tool, which almost no small business needs. Pro was $20 a month per person. Prices move, so confirm current numbers on the pricing page before you buy.
The five-seat minimum is the detail most summaries skip. It means Team never costs less than $125 a month, whether you have five people or one.
| People who use Claude | Pro for each person (monthly) | Team, billed monthly | Team, billed annually |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | $20 | $150 (5-seat minimum) | $125 (5-seat minimum) |
| 3 | $60 | $150 (5-seat minimum) | $125 (5-seat minimum) |
| 5 | $100 | $150 | $125 |
| 8 | $160 | $240 | $200 |
A three-person clinic on Team pays for two empty chairs. On paper Team is never the cheaper of the two. You buy it for the admin controls and the commercial data terms, which the next section covers. The same seat-math trap applies on the OpenAI side, and our breakdown of what ChatGPT costs per seat for a small business walks through it.
Now compare the API. Say you have Claude Sonnet draft 300 customer emails a month. Each one reads about 2,000 tokens of context (the customer's message, the job details, your past reply) and writes about 500 tokens. At Sonnet's published rate of $3 per million input tokens and $15 per million output tokens, that comes to 600,000 input tokens ($1.80) plus 150,000 output tokens ($2.25). The total is about $4 for the month, and that is for the whole shop, not per person. To find your own number, multiply your monthly drafts by those token counts and check the current rate on Anthropic's pricing docs.
Where the obvious answer is wrong
"I need the business plan so my data isn't used for training." This is half true. Since Anthropic's 2025 update to its consumer terms, Free, Pro and Max users are asked whether their chats can be used to train models. If you say yes, Anthropic can keep that data for up to five years. Team, Enterprise and the API all fall under Anthropic's commercial terms, where your data isn't used for training by default. So the privacy line doesn't run between Pro and Team. It runs between consumer accounts and commercial ones, and the API is on the commercial side at a fraction of Team's price.
"Team will plug Claude into my business." It mostly won't, not on its own. Team is a better chat window. Staff still copy a customer's email into Claude, copy the answer back out, and paste it into your inbox or quoting tool. Team does offer connectors, but someone has to set them up, and they reach the large apps rather than whatever system actually holds your jobs and invoices. If the goal is "draft the follow-up when a quote goes unanswered for three days," you need software that calls Claude for you. That is the API's job.
"The API is for developers." Building on it from scratch is developer work. Using it isn't. Creating a key takes about five minutes and costs nothing, as we covered in what an AI API key actually costs per month. You paste the key into a tool that supports it and set a spending limit in Anthropic's console. Fynl's portal works this way: you paste your own Claude or ChatGPT key, the AI features inside the CRM, email and quotes run on it, and Anthropic bills you directly with no markup. One caution: a Pro or Team subscription does not include API credit. They are billed separately, the same split we explained for ChatGPT Plus and the OpenAI API.
Which one to pick
The answer depends on two things: how many people chat with Claude every day, and whether you want AI working inside your other tools or just in a browser tab.
- One to four people, mostly chatting: give Pro to the people who will really use it, and switch off the training setting in each account's privacy controls. It's cheaper than Team at every headcount below five.
- Five or more people chatting daily, and you want one bill and the ability to remove a departing employee's access in one click: Team earns its price. Take annual billing if you're sure, since it saves $5 a seat each month.
- You want Claude to draft emails, summarize leads, or write quotes inside the software you already use: get an API key, set a monthly cap of $10 to $20 to start, and connect it to a tool that accepts your own key. Most shops can do this with zero Team seats.
- You have an IT person, need single sign-on, or face a compliance audit: talk to Anthropic's sales team about Enterprise. There is no public price, so get a quote before you plan around it.
Plenty of businesses end up with a mix: one Pro seat for the owner, who likes to think out loud with Claude, plus an API key doing the repetitive work in the background. Questions people also ask
Is "Claude for Work" a separate product from Claude Team?
No. Claude for Work is Anthropic's umbrella label for its two company plans, Team and Enterprise. When you buy, you choose one of those two.
Can I buy Claude Team for just two people?
You can, but you pay for five seats regardless, because Team has a five-seat minimum. At published prices that is $125 a month billed annually or $150 billed monthly, so two Pro plans at $20 each come out far cheaper.
Does a Claude Team or Pro subscription include API usage?
No. Subscriptions cover the chat app. API usage is billed separately, per token, through Anthropic's developer console, and you have to add a payment method there.
Is the Claude API safe to use with customer data?
The API runs under Anthropic's commercial terms, which by default do not use your inputs to train models. Read the terms against your own obligations, especially if you run a clinic or handle health records, and don't send more customer detail than the task needs.
